About The Show

The Synopsis

Sophie Treadwell's Expressionist masterpiece traces the journey of a Young Woman who, coerced into a loveless marriage and a suffocating domestic life, is driven to a desperate act of violence. Through nine episodic scenes, the play explores the mechanical, relentless rhythm of modern life and the impossibility of finding peace within it.

Director's Vision

"I am looking to create a world that captures the crushing nature of life’s repetition; the systems that we find ourselves in, which we can’t escape from. This is the central idea that the production explores; what actions are justifiable if they mean escape from the life you find yourself bound to? The trick of this play is warping the performance and production elements around the young woman’s emotional state- she is the lens that the audience experiences this world through. "
— Charlotte Reay, Director

Why We Are Excited

This production offers unique opportunities for actors to explore expressionist movement and stylised dialogue. Backstage, we are building a world from industrial soundscapes and harsh lighting. It is a challenge, a machine, and a masterpiece.
